Perhaps you plan on renovating your home this year, but it’s overwhelming to think about beginning the process. We understand!
At Titus Contracting, we recommend asking yourself a few questions to help ensure that you have a good renovation experience. It’s like when you want to buy a new car, you should think about what kind you want, what color, what features you want it to have, etc. before showing up to the car dealership so you are able to receive the best vehicle options for your needs and desires.
Whether you want an updated kitchen or bathroom, are looking to put an addition on your home or update the exterior, take into consideration the following questions before you hire a designer or go to speak with a contractor.
Before starting a home remodeling project, ask yourself these questions:
What problems do you want to solve?
We pride ourselves on creating not only beautiful spaces, but functional spaces that truly address your needs. With that comes our process of thinking about the functionality of the space first. How do you want the space to function when all is said and done? What problems do you want to solve in that space? A few additional questions our design team asks during this phase are:
- What do you love about your home?
- What do you not love about your home?
- What’s working in your space/what’s not?
Ultimately, it comes down to what specifically you are hoping to accomplish with your remodel. It is important to have a clear vision of that from before you even meet with your designer, so you are able to refine it together and move into the rest of the remodeling process confidently.
What time of year do you want to renovate?
Depending on what type of renovation you are looking for, there may be a more practical time of year to complete it. For example, if you want a new porch for the summer months, you should start preparing for it at the end of the winter. If you want to host family for the holidays, it would be wise to start preparing for your kitchen remodel in the spring or summer months.
How much can you realistically afford to spend?
We’ll be honest, this is one of the first things a contractor will ask you when starting a home remodeling project. Many parts of your project will stem from how much you can afford to spend such as the overall scope of your project, and the materials that will be used. Another thing to think about and a helpful way to determine how much you should spend is to think about how long you plan to live in your home.
A few extra expenses we share with our clients to ensure their budget includes (even if they’re not directly included in our part of the project):
- Does it include accommodations for if you need to move out of your space for a few months?
- Does your budget include appliances, furniture, lighting fixtures, and any other home accessories you will want to furnish the space?
- Does it include a buffer for unexpected expenses?
What is on my “wish list” and what is on my “must-have” list?
Depending on the type of home project you’re doing, it’s helpful to have a general idea of what you want the end result to look like. What items are on your wish list? Do you want a steam shower in the primary bathroom? Is a spacious or open-concept kitchen and living area a must-have for you? It is helpful to see inspiration photos or your Pinterest board to get a closer look at what you envision for your spaces, especially if your wish list or must-have items are more difficult to communicate or convey. We want our clients to have no regrets!
Am I planning to use reputable professionals?
As a professional design-build firm, we believe this is the most important question and thing for you to consider before renovating your home! Start by asking yourself, “What do I expect of the company that I want to hire?” Ask around your inner circles for referrals for architects, contractors, interior designers, and other professionals before hiring them. It is also wise to ask said reputable professionals a few questions prior to agreeing to work with them to ensure it is a great fit for both parties involved.
